Community Engaged Research and Advancing Social Justice in Latinx and Other Marginalized Communities

Abstract

This paper discusses key topics to consider when trying to impact policy and practice through community engaged research. It draws on 15 years’ experience partnering with progressive organizations, including grassroots youth organizing groups, immigrant rights organizations, education justice organizations, and labor unions serving largely Latinx constituencies. Topics discussed include: (a) forming and managing relationships with community partners; (b) developing research questions that advance social justice efforts; (c) disseminating research findings accessible to general audiences; (d) building the capacity of community partners and student research assistants to jointly produce and leverage research; (d) assessing the personal, educational, and broader social impacts of community engaged research. A case study of youth voter outreach efforts in the Central Valley of California is used to elaborate on the above topics.
