Problem to be addressed
How can sociologists partner with practitioners to advance a progressive advocacy agenda through social science research? Sociologists are trained to conduct research in academic settings, while practice settings provide distinct research environments. This roundtable discussion will center on best practices and challenges specific to conducting research in non-profit, advocacy organizations.
Approach
The discussion will unpack challenges and opportunities associated with conducting research in an advocacy setting, drawing on specific cases from the presenter's experience as a researcher at a national immigration advocacy non-profit organization.
Items to be addressed include: maintaining the integrity of social science research methods within an advocacy agenda; demonstrating the value of social science research to practitioners in fields of law, communications, and policy; navigating resource limitations; communicating research findings; and ethical considerations. I will also consider the challenges and advantages specific to using qualitative research approaches in advocacy settings: for example, overcoming perceptions of qualitative research as only a source of anecdotal “stories” and instead demonstrating its value as a persuasive empirical tool. Following the annual meeting theme, “Engaging Social Justice for a Better World,” I will draw on specific examples of implementing a research program to support social and economic justice for low-income immigrants in areas including immigration enforcement, workers’ rights, and access to safety net programs.
How presentation will be useful for audience members
The presentation will be useful for audience members who are interested in or already engaged in research for advocacy purposes and bridging the gap between sociological research and social justice work. It will provide an opportunity to consider and troubleshoot the particular challenges associated with conducting research in advocacy settings.
