Neighbourhood Schooling and Students Mobility in the Context of Inequality of Opportunity in India

Abstract

When there is inequality in educational opportunity in a socio-economically diversified country like India, student's mobility for better school need proper attention. Under the context of inequality of different types of educational opportunities as well as variations in quality, how students from various sections of society are moving for schooling has been studied here. How far the student's mobility, as well as transportation, gets mediated by households is the central theme of this study. The study focuses on elementary (standard I to XII) education in an eastern Indian state West Bengal with emphasis on neighbourhood schooling policy implemented in 2012. Various secondary as well as primary dataset from location representing disadvantaged –advantaged continuum has been used here with statistical methods in this study. A wide variation has been found where advantaged sections are shifting to schools which are not located in the neighbourhood for the pursuit of best learning.
