Practicing Sociological Research in a Non-Research Setting

Abstract

Elevate Energy is a non-profit with a mission of expanding access to clean energy and energy efficiency, and is primarily a program implementer. The programs Elevate Energy administers include low-income energy efficiency, community solar, dynamic electricity pricing, and healthy homes upgrades. As a Research Manager I support our programs and conduct innovative research to advance our mission and the energy industry.

This presentation will describe my experience practicing sociology as part of a small research team in an organization focusing on non-research work. While Elevate Energy’s mission and ideals are closely aligned with sociological thinking as well as “Engaging Social Justice for a Better World”, there can be tensions between research practice and project budgets, client requirements, program goals, or other considerations. When program staff request research support or information, the word “research” can refer to something as simple as an internet search, a rigorous academic-style research project, or anything in between. Much of the work involves managing the shifting balance between methodological rigor and other project needs, managing expectations around what researchers can do with a given budget or timeframe, and ensuring that our program staff communicate research findings with appropriate caveats when needed.
