Scarlet Letters: How school suspensions shape educational outcomes

Abstract

School suspensions have been the subject of much scholarship and policymaking over the previous decade, often finding disparities along racial, gender and socioeconomic lines. While studies find associations between being suspended and negative school and life outcomes, few have measured if these consequences are experienced equally. This study adds to this literature by investigating the relationship between getting suspended and future academic outcomes. Preliminary results indicate that the consequences of being suspended are not equally shared along axes of race and gender.
