While the nation converges: State-level variation in fertility schedule disparities

Mon, August 12, 8:30 to 10:10am, Sheraton New York, Floor: Lower Level, Columbus Circle

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to analyze how the difference in fertility by level of advantage varies across US states and within US states across time. For each state, I estimate age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs) and age-specific risks of first birth (ASFR1) for near-poor (<185% FPL) and non-poor (>185% FPL) women over time using 2005-2016 American Community Survey data. While national-level comparisons show a convergence in ASFRs and ASFR1s between women with varying levels of advantage over the period, state-level trends indicate that this convergence has occurred rapidly in some states and very slowly in others.
