Witness of Intimate Partner Violence in Childhood and Risk of Abuse in Adulthood

Sun, August 11, 10:30 to 11:30am, Sheraton New York, Floor: Third Floor, New York Ballroom West

Abstract

By utilizing a sample of 800 ever married Indonesia women, this study addresses the relationship between the childhood witness of intimate partner violence and the risk of violence victimization in adulthood. The study is guided by the Intergenerational Transmission of Violence theory, and makes use of measures seen commonly throughout the extant literature. Operationalization of the experience of violence is achieved through the Conflict Tactics Scale and is analyzed through multiple logistic regression. Findings strongly link the witness of violence in childhood with the risk of violence in adulthood, consistent with the extant literature.
