This paper develops a new model for studying selection processes, based on foundational insights in the literature. Key elements of the selection framework include an explicit selection function, the selection profiles it yields – which indicate whether the selection is monotonic (positive, negative, or zero) or nonmonotonic (U-shaped, inverse U-shaped, or some other shape) -- and the effects of family dynamics, exit-entry rules, and other costs or inducements on actual migration. The framework incorporates and clarifies degrees of selectivity and the challenge of discerning selection from a sample of movers, which includes tied movers and misses tied stayers.
