Seeking Islamic Justice: Muslim New Yorkers Reframing the Narrative of Islam Post 9/11

Tue, August 13, 10:30am to 12:10pm, New York Hilton, Floor: Concourse, Concourse C

Abstract

Muslim American communities have experienced a significant increase in Islamophobia and racialization since 9/11. The surge in fear mongering and negative political rhetoric about Islam caused Muslim community leaders to actively spread Islamic awareness. This paper highlights the role of masjid communities, community leaders and Muslim campus organizations in developing interfaith projects that seek to clarify misconceptions about Islam. With a specific focus on post-1965 immigrant Muslim community organizing, I examine how first and second-generation Muslim Americans are working towards achieving Islamic justice in the United States.
