From Sociollogy Professor to Professional Sociologist: A First-Year Survival Guide

Sat, August 10, 2:30 to 4:10pm, New York Hilton, Floor: Second Floor, Regent

Abstract

In this presentation, I look back the challenges and opportunities of my first year as a professional sociologist in a corporate setting, after having spent nearly a decade as a sociology professor. I focus on the following four topics: going corporate; being a scientist outside academia; converting sociological research into business value; and converting sociological research into business culture. I share personal examples and lessons learned, and I close with some thoughts on the growing convergence between academic and commercial research in sociology.
