Ethnoracial frames and narratives in an affirmative action program in Peru

Sat, August 10, 2:30 to 4:10pm, New York Hilton, Floor: Concourse, Concourse C

Abstract

I examine testimonies of fellows of the International Fellowship Program of the Ford Foundation—an affirmative action program for ethnoracial minorities—in Peru. The article examines testimonies gathered before and after partaking in the program, comparing how racial and ethnic boundaries are drawn, how do the beneficiaries classify themselves, and how they explain racial and ethnic inequalities. The article identifies two ways in which the fellows' ethnoracial frames change after participating in the program. The article thus contributes to understanding how partaking in affirmative action initiatives affects the beneficiaries’ ethnoracial categories of classification and their perceptions of racial and ethnic hierarchies.
