How do societies engage in war? Why do they go to war? Why do alternatives fail? Are some state structures conducive to war? As organization and functioning of military forces undergo substantial changes, how do we understand the soldiers who fight war? What meanings do soldiers give to fighting war? Are those meanings shared by non-military members of society? This session will examine changes in how and why war is conducted.
