Is later life “the best of times, the worst of times, or somewhere in between?” To answer this question, Carr analyzes national data sets, disaggregated by different social groups and categories, to delve into the ways that persistent race, class, and gender inequalities shape experiences of old age in the United States. While other scholars have focused solely on economic insecurity among the elderly, Carr widens the scope of analysis to include physical, emotional, and social inequalities. The book reveals the myriad ways that adversity and disadvantage can snowball to undermine older adults’ physical and mental health, relationships, living conditions, and end-of-life care. Given the resurgent interest in inequality, Golden Years? fills a gap in the relative inattention to how these issues manifest themselves differently among older adults.
