The U.S. Census Bureau has a long history of collecting data related to citizenship and nativity, beginning with the 1820 decennial census. This panel will discuss how the Census Bureau has asked residents about nativity and citizenship throughout history and present day. It will address the current practices and challenges of asking respondents about citizenship status in decennial censuses and current demographic surveys and also discuss the layout of the question, response options and current data products. Panelist will also discuss the proposed question on Citizenship status for the 2020 Census and the intersection of citizenship status by demographic characteristics such as race and Hispanic origin; highlighting the changing nature of citizenship in the United States.
