Description

Introduction to Sociology, and other early core courses in the discipline, serve a variety of functions. They introduce students to the sociological imagination, as well as social-scientific research methods and theory development. They engage students in the sociology major, serve as electives and required courses in a variety of degree programs, and prepare students for social-science content on graduate placement exams. They can be viewed as a gateway to an area of specialized interest or study, a necessary pre-requisite for a seemingly unrelated course or career plan, and a cornerstone of civic-engagement programs and practices. How do faculty, in all educational positions and contexts, address these myriad functions? What are the innovative techniques that help faculty to teach – and reach – the various students in, and topics of, introductory courses? This session is designed as an opportunity for faculty to share and showcase new and effective methods for teaching Introduction to Sociology and other early core courses in the discipline.
