Description

Sociology happens in many and varied settings. Sociologists of all types – those working in applied settings, in academic centers, in “non-sociological” environments, like businesses, and others – carry out their sociological research, policy and program actions in different ways. Sometimes these differences are driven by organizational requirements and constraints. Other times, the sociological decisions are more flexible. Though defined differently across settings, in virtually all of the environments in which sociologists work, problem solving is a core component of the institution’s function, if not the primary driver. This session will present sociological problem-solving perspectives across several of these domains. Representatives from sociologically-formed businesses, academic centers with an applied focus, and government sectors will speak from their roles about specific problem areas.
