Description

Genetic research, and the home-based genetic ancestry kits, raise interesting questions about the meaning of race and belonging. When Elizabeth Warren declared herself "Indian" based on a genetic test, leaders of the Cherokee Nation declined to claim her as one of their own. What do such claims and refusals tell us about race and belonging?

Papers in this session will take up what the quickly changing field of genetics, as well as in the popular imagination and use of that science, tell us about race and belonging.
