3516 - Leveraging Community-Engaged Scholarship for Social and Institutional Change

Mon, August 12, 4:30 to 6:10pm, New York Hilton, Floor: Second Floor, Murray Hill West

Session Submission Type: Workshop

Description

Sociology as a discipline has rediscovered public engagement. Michael Burowoy’s (2005) call for public sociology, the creation of the Sociology Action Network, the emergence of research/practice partnerships across the country, and foundation supports for these efforts all point to the energy behind community engaged scholarship (CES). Researchers who conduct (CES) partner with community members and activists to create knowledge in direct support of equity-oriented change agendas. This kind of research challenges the hierarchy of expertise and the hegemony of academic knowledge. Unfortunately, mainstream sociology often creates incentives that undermine the vitality and feasibility of such work.

In this workshop, we draw on scholarship and experiences from members of the Urban Research Based Action Network (URBAN) - a coalition of 1,800+ scholars, activists, and artists who have been working to build the emergent field of CES. Through participating in this session, attendees will gain new knowledge about incentivizing and institutionalizing CES in their institutions, establishing sustainable partnerships with community based organizations, preparing undergraduate and graduate students to conduct this kind of research, publishing scholarship based on CES, and bringing an intersectional lens to CES.
