Session Submission Type: Workshop
Many sociologists are interested in participating in public sociology, but there remain formidable differences between the social worlds of journalists and sociologists. In this interactive session, Nicholas Lemann, staff writer for the New Yorker and former Dean of the Columbia Journalism School, provides an analysis of the sociology of journalism, the advantages which sociologists can offer journalists, and what sociologists can learn from journalists. Comments by Nick Lemann followed by commentary from Michael Schudson, author of The News Media: What Everyone Needs to Know, and Shamus Kahn, Columbia University. Annette Lareau, University of Pennsylvania, will preside.
