3113 - The New Research Compact: Social Science Partnerships for the Common Good

In an era of mis- and dis-information and the questioning of expertise, the integrity and accessibility of socially relevant knowledge is critical to informed public debate on vital issues. In September 2018, the SSRC released the report of its To Secure Knowledge Task Force, examining how present and future social science research can be secured through partnerships between the academy, government and the private sector. The report, the culmination of eighteen months of consultation, engages the optimal and necessary institutional infrastructure for social science at a moment at which research is happening in spaces within and beyond the academy and the value of research is being debating in many spheres of society. The report identifies long-term developments and present threats that have created both challenges and unique opportunities for the social sciences, as well as offers recommendations to address these issues. In this session, panelists representing the many sectors where social science research is both supported and undertaken will consider the report and offer their reflections on its recommendations.
