2148 - Transcending the Academy: How, Why, and When to Practice Public Sociology

Sun, August 11, 8:30 to 10:10am, Sheraton New York, Floor: Lower Level, Columbus Circle

Session Submission Type: Workshop

Description

Drawing from the theme of this year's Annual Meeting, "Engaging Social Justice for a Better World," applying sociological research to the public sphere is a goal for many of us. Effective strategies for doing so, however, may remain unclear for many early-career sociologists. Further, time and effort spent on translating or applying our work beyond academia may seem to come at a cost to our research productively, an important concern as we consider outcomes such as attaining employment and tenure. In this workshop, panelists who practice "public sociology" will share their suggestions and their own experiences. The discussion will cover topics such as: How do you practice public sociology (op-eds, policy engagement, community organizing)? How could students leverage public sociology (e.g. writing for non-academic audience) in the job market? At what point in your career did you start practicing public sociology? And finally, how could public sociology be used as a means of social activism/advocacy?
