Abstract

Around the world children are traveling, often unaccompanied, to new countries to seek better lives. Some are very young while others are approaching adulthood. Irrespective of where they come from, these children share common characteristics, struggles, and use of agency. Creation of preventable trauma is associated with how social institutions address, or fail to address their needs. Particular focus of this paper is on the situation at the US-Mexico border. This paper is part of a forthcoming book by Springer on unaccompanied youth using a UNCRC framework.
