Transnational Concerted Cultivation and School-Choice: Examining Return Migrants' School-Choice Decisions

Sat, August 8, 5:10 to 6:10pm PDT (5:10 to 6:10pm PDT), Parc55, Floor: Level 4, Cyril Magnin I

Abstract

This article examines how high-skilled, return migrant parents navigate K-12 educational options in Bangalore, a city in southwest India. It does so by addressing the following question: What factors do they consider when making their school-choice decisions? Through analyzing interviews with 36 return migrant parents, I argue that they make school-choice decisions according to the logic of transnational concerted cultivation. This is a parenting technique designed to give youth the skills necessary to navigate educational and professional options around the globe. Return migrants enact this parenting logic by making school-choice decisions based on the types of cultural capital they would like their children to acquire, their children’s interests, and where they will go for college.
