This paper outlines the Korean diaspora in contemporary Japan, specifically focusing on the shifting strategies of full-time Korean schools in the globalized economy. Examining alternatives to the Japanese national education system for Korean minority children based on secondary data and participant observations of school events, this paper identifies the contradictory challenges Korean minority education faces in response to larger social forces. Full-time Korean schools today are remarkably similar, regardless of their support for the Korean nation-state (ROK, South Korea, or DPRK, North Korea) and founding pedagogical ideals.
