Spousal Choice and Marital Communication in India

Mon, August 10, 5:10 to 6:10pm PDT (5:10 to 6:10pm PDT), Hilton San Francisco Union Square, Floor: Ballroom Level, Imperial B

Abstract

Spousal choice is one of the crucial factors that may affect marital quality. This study focuses on the effect of different spousal choice mechanisms on the frequency of marital communication. In India, traditionally, parental influence has been dominant in choosing one’s spouse but in recent times, new patterns of spousal choice are emerging. Using the nationally representative India Human Development Survey (IHDS), I use ordinal logistic regression models and propensity score matching to investigate the association between spousal choice and marital communication. Contrary to the expectation, I find that self-choice marriages have lower levels of marital communication. The duration of marriage has a significant effect on marital communications and is especially important for parentally arranged marriages.
