Given the social importance of political trust in Latin America, we examine differences in trust in political institutions by year, and individual-level characteristics in ten South American countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, and Argentina. Our first analytic objective is to explore contemporary levels of trust in each country, and changes in these levels of trust from 2010 to 2018-9. In addition, we examine whether there are significant differences in trust by sex, ethno-racial status, age, level of urbanization, and years of schooling. Keeping in mind the complexities of ethno-racial norms, beliefs, and hierarchies in contexts of mestizaje, Spanish for ethno-racial mixture, we use a multidimensional approach for analyzing differences in trust by ethno-racial status.
