University students' experiences with the impacts of the recent 2022 flooding in Sylhet, Bangladesh

Abstract

This study primarily examines the experiences of university students during the recent floods in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh, focusing on the impact of the floods on students and their coping mechanisms in response to this sudden catastrophic event. Taking in-depth interviews with 20 University students our findings reveal that students were impacted in many ways due to the 2022 flood event in Sylhet. One of the major consequences experienced by students during the flood was the negative effect on their education and mental well-being. Many students were feared, traumatized, and felt isolated. Several other students exhibited perseverance by assisting the flood victims, participating in rescue operations, and distributing relief provisions. The findings also indicated that students experienced a significant impact on their financial circumstances. Many students lost their tuition jobs, were unable to receive support from their families, or were unable to financially assist their parents. Lastly, results showed that following this difficult time, students resumed their regular lives, which included starting their classes, meeting with friends, getting back in touch with family, and managing their private tuition jobs. The catastrophic incident and the challenges encountered by the students can serve as valuable lessons for future floods or similar calamities, prompting authorities to implement appropriate measures to ensure the continuity of education while also addressing the financial and psychological well-being of students.
