This presentation briefly showcases ways instructors can help students develop and practice skills for civic engagement. I show how sociology classes can incorporate an assignment in which students write a letter to the editor or op-ed, a similar assignment involving writing to a representative or other decision-maker, and a class activity based around calling an elected official. I draw on past uses of these assignments and address their challenges and educational merits. Attendees will gain in their skill and comfort in incorporating these activities into their courses.
