Sociology Meets AI: Innovative Pedagogy for Critical Engagement and Ethical Practice

Sat, August 9, 10:00 to 11:30am, West Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Regency B

Abstract

I explore the integration of AI into sociology education through three innovative teaching practices designed to foster critical engagement and ethical responsibility. In the first assignment, Crafting a Vivid Self-Description with AI, students use generative AI tools to create self-portraits while critically analyzing the strengths and limitations of AI in representing identity. This exercise encourages reflection on the interplay between technology and self-perception. In the second teaching practice, students design an Ethical AI Usage Policy, where they collaboratively create guidelines for the responsible use of AI in academic and professional settings. Through this process, they engage in meaningful dialogue about AI and ethics. In the AI-SOC Odyssey Project, students use generative AI tools to create a sociology-related essay. They evaluate the AI-generated essay based on multiple criteria, analyze their peers’ evaluations, complete an analytical summary report, and present the dynamics of AI, education, and their own learning. This project is designed to deepen students’ understanding of AI and the value of human intelligence.

Together, these teaching practices emphasize critical engagement with AI, ethical decision-making, and the connection between classroom learning and real-world challenges. By bridging sociology and AI, this approach transforms traditional learning into a dynamic and reflective educational experience. This innovative pedagogy: 1) Teaches students to create effective prompts while understanding its limits; 2) Equips students to use AI tools in ways that are ethical, transparent, and accountable; 3) Encourages students to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs; 4) Prepares students to navigate a technology-evolving world, ensuring they use AI effectively, responsibly, and ethically.
