Men Seeking Academic Advice? Differences in Frequency of Advising Meetings and Impact on Academic Success

Sat, August 9, 4:00 to 5:00pm, East Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Grand Ballroom A

Abstract

Although academic advising is a key resource on college campuses, students may not utilize or reap its benefits equally. Some scholars suggest that men are less likely to utilize academic resources than women, although comparative research based on actual advising appointments is limited. Our study uses a unique dataset containing every recorded advising appointment from 2017-2021 in one of the largest university systems in the US. We find descriptively that men overall go to advising meetings less than women; however, these patterns vary drastically by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Regarding academic impacts, meeting with an advisor positively affects GPA for most groups; however, for graduation, only women - particularly white women - benefit from meeting with advisors.
