This roundtable discussion will focus on the experiences of professors from two designated Hispanic-Serving Institutions: a community college and a private four-year Catholic University. The discussion will address the unique challenges posed by the use of generative artificial intelligence among first-generation college students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Many of these students often come from low socioeconomic status households, are often immigrants or the children of immigrants, and are pressed for time with competing demands at home and work. Due to these circumstances some of them are turning to generative AI to complete coursework, overlooking the fact that they are inhibiting their writing, critical, and analytical thinking skills when they employ this technology. Strategies to both prevent and accommodate the use of AI will be discussed. Coming up with an AI classroom policy could help students understand when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use AI in the classroom and may prevent cheating and plagiarism, which could help faculty members continue with their role of educator instead of AI monitor.
