Phantom limb pain (PLP) is one of the most intriguing and challenging conditions in modern neuroscience and pain management. Despite centuries of documented cases dating back to the 16th century, the condition remains shrouded in medical uncertainty, with patients often struggling to have their experience fully recognised and addressed by healthcare professionals. This paper examines the current state of PLP research, identifies critical gaps in patient-centred approaches, and proposes a rethink of how the medical and scientific communities engage with this complex condition.
