Sun, August 10, 2:00 to 3:30pm, East Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Grand Ballroom B

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how the intersection of Black and LGBTQ+ identities of 26 participants shapes their experiences and involvement in LGBTQ+ events in Arizona. Drawing on queer of color critique and placemaking theory, the research explores how Black LGBTQ+ individuals navigate Arizona Pride events, highlighting the ways in which Black and LGBTQ+ identities shape their navigation. Through a structured interview approach, interviews were conducted at Pride events in Arizona with the aim of addressing two main research questions: “How do Black LGBTQ+ individuals interpret their experiences at Pride events?”, and “Do Pride events serve as spaces of community for Black LGBTQ+ individuals?' '. The findings indicate that many Black LGBTQ+ attendees are motivated to attend events like LGBTQ+ festivals due to the support and encouragement of their friends or romantic partners. Within these spaces, participants generally feel comfortable or at ease because of the felt experience of the space, fostering confidence and authenticity. Friends also play a significant role in creating a sense of community within these spaces, similar to the feeling provided by the festival itself. However, some participants expressed concerns about the lack of safe spaces outside of LGBTQ+ events due to the presence of homophobia within outside spaces. Overall, LGBTQ+ spaces such as festivals provide a crucial sense of belonging for many individuals, although there remains a concern about the lack of Black representation within these spaces. The study’s findings shed light on how Black LGBTQ+ residents in Arizona navigate their identities and experiences within Pride events, highlighting their resilience in maintaining space despite racial underrepresentation in the state.
