The introduction of ChatGPT and other AI tools in 2022 ushered in a new era of pornography and other adult content. Consequently, academia has developed a rich literature from many fields focusing on disentangling social, material, and ethical impacts of these new developments, most notably grappling with the increasing availability of harmful deepfakes and child sexual abuse materials. Using articles and gray literature gathered via Web of Science and Google Scholar, this critical review seeks to survey the empirical and theoretical work currently available on these topics and identify common themes and missing pieces. In particular, preliminary analysis finds significant attention paid to developing AI tools to detect and filter out sexual imagery for internet users and less, but still significant, focus on image-based sexual abuse, human interactions with erotic artificial intelligence, and medical or therapeutic uses of AI. There is a dearth of literature on the perspectives of those whose lives are most likely to be affected by AI in pornography: sex workers and digital laborers around the world.
