Trust and COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake Speed: Exploring the Impact of Trust on Immunization Rates

Mon, August 11, 4:00 to 5:30pm, East Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Grand Ballroom B

Abstract

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, a suite of interventions has been implemented to mitigate, eliminate, and ultimately reverse the virus's adverse impacts. During the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid development, distribution, and implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine raised significant concerns among the public regarding its unprecedented speed. Despite concerted efforts and the widespread adoption of analogous strategies across jurisdictions, discernible variations in outcomes have manifested. Some countries or cities demonstrated swifter mobilization and faster first-dose vaccine uptake, resulting in diminished mortality rates and transmission. Building upon extensive prior research on vaccine hesitancy, this study examines the timing of vaccine uptake, investigating the effects of social trust on this important health outcome.
