This paper examines residential change and decline among Puerto Ricans in New York City. Census data shows the Puerto Rican NYC population has experienced significant demographic changes from 1990 to 2020. One major change was the decline of the overall population, including their limited growth within the boroughs. This demographic shift has impacted neighborhoods which housed a considerable amount of Puerto Ricans. Using 1980-2020 Census data, I conduct a comparative analysis among Puerto Ricans in five residential areas: the Lower Eastside, East Harlem, the South Bronx, Bushwick, and Williamsburg, to determine what factors have influenced this migratory pattern. Preliminary findings suggest that Puerto Ricans are migrating to other parts of the country (Florida, Pennsylvania) as well as the City’s suburbs. The research also suggests the increased cost of living in these neighborhoods and gentrification is leading to out-migration.
