Reimagining the Future of Work: Applying Sociological Skills as a Consultant

Mon, August 11, 2:00 to 3:30pm, West Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Acapulco

Abstract

Sociologists have marketable, in-demand skills that align perfectly with consulting. Coupled with other skillsets that sociologists often possess such as teaching and managing large groups, expertise in systems thinking, or extensive cultural knowledge, sociologists are well-suited to be exceptional consultants.

The goal of this interactive workshop is explore how sociologists can utilize skills in areas such as research, analysis, and teaching to work as consultants in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, higher education, and corporate environments. Participants will gain insight into how consulting work differs from academia and how sociologists can transition into consulting as a side project, as a part-time venture, or by making a full career shift.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

• why the current consulting environment is promising for sociologists
• how sociological skills and knowledge that can be applied to consulting
• how consulting work compares to academic practice
• an introduction to consulting basics
• the mindset shifts required to step in the world of consulting

Through interactive discussion and reflection, attendees are invited to assess their personal constellation of skills that can be applied outside academia and begin mapping a path to consulting. In the end, we hope to help participants envision a future where applied sociology plays a pivotal role in reimagining the landscape of work, and potentially, the landscape of their lives.

At the end of this session, we hope to have equipped sociologists with both the inspiration and practical tools needed to navigate and thrive in a rapidly evolving professional world. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how consulting can be a viable and fulfilling pathway for sociologists seeking to apply their knowledge and skills in new places and in new and impactful ways.
