Mapping Latinidades: Mexicanidad and Puertorriqueñidad in Utah’s Wasatch Front

Mon, August 11, 4:00 to 5:00pm, West Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Regency B

Abstract

Latinx communities have a long history in Utah starting with Mexican families at the turn of the 20th century and Puerto Rican families during the WWII era. Traditional cultural dance became a mainstay of early cultural celebrations, and even today, a way to strengthen community bonds and Latinx identity. Oral histories and artifacts collaboratively collected recently with the Utah Historical Society for the Peoples of Utah Revisited Project, will form the basis of an ArcGIS Storymap that demonstrates the development and maintenance of Latinidad in Utah’s Wasatch Front.
