BlaQ and Not So Mild: Quare Framing of Social Issues

Mon, August 11, 4:00 to 5:30pm, East Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Grand Ballroom B

Abstract

Black queer folks (here after BlaQs) are subjugated to low rungs of racial and gendered hierarchies in the US. They transgress norms for respectable Black people and defy gender norms by rejecting heterosexuality. Their experiences at the margin of both Black and queer communities offer unique insights into a world without dominant group privilege. This study will focus on the collective agency of a BlaQ community in response to the anti BlaQ- world, where anti-BlaQness is the intersection of homophobia, cis-heterosexism, and most importantly race. This study pursues the following research questions, did BlaQ comedic podcast, The Read contribute to framing of social issues for its listeners in 2020? And if so, how were these issues defined and intervened? To answer these questions, I am conducting a content analysis of The Read, a podcast produced by BlaQ comedic hosts in 2020.
