The Social Network of Black and White Women who Experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences Over Time

Sun, August 10, 2:00 to 3:30pm, West Tower, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: Ballroom Level/Gold, Regency A

Abstract

Racial disparities occur over the life course, and some of these disparities result in differences in the social worlds of racial groups. In this paper, we examine Black-White differences in the social network ties of women who experienced adverse childhood experiences, including problematic and conflictual relationships with their mother in childhood. By addressing the question of racial differences among this group and in this domain, our research is relevant to understanding the gendered and racialized pathways of estrangement and reconciliation among adult daughters and their mothers and the role social networks play in this dynamic. Our study is situated in the following literatures: sociology of social networks, sociology of the life course, and the family.
