This paper will give a preliminary report of findings from a qualitative study of panhandling interactions in New York City that I am currently undertaking. Based on fieldwork and in-depth interviews with those who seek and give alms, I examine the negotiation of moral identities and property boundaries in these interactions, which I believe can contribute to our understanding of processes of social reproduction and change pertaining to inequality and capitalism.
