The papers in this session assess the state of the institution of marriage in the United States and abroad. The papers consider differences in marital satisfaction and commitment across gender and relationship type as well as the stressors that impact overall happiness for married couples. Lastly, the session considers how married individuals adapt their practices in support of the institution’s endurance even when alternatives are available. Collectively papers pose questions about the longevity and compulsory nature of the marriage institution for some individuals.
