Herbert Gans, a leading sociologist and 78th president of the American Sociological Association, died April 21, 2025, at age 97. In notable books like The War Against the Poor, Democracy and the News, and Making Sense of America, Gans examined poverty, government policy, and more. His influential work garnered several prestigious ASA awards, including the 2006 WEB Distinguished Career of Scholarship and the 1999 Public Understanding of Sociology Award.
