An Overview of Teaching Introduction to Sociology

Abstract

This presentation introduces our book Teaching Introduction to Sociology, an edited volume developed to support instructors and programs seeking to strengthen their introductory sociology courses. The book brings together contributors from multiple countries and institutional contexts to reflect the wide variation in how the course is taught. Part 1 centers the Sociological Literacy Framework (SLF), outlining key concepts and skills and offering pedagogical strategies and assessments for teaching them effectively. Part 2 situates the course within broader academic and professional goals, addressing its role in general education, preparation for majors, career readiness, and meeting the needs of diverse student groups, including “one and done” and pre med students. Part 3 provides global perspectives on ideological resistance, decolonization, and diversity, showing how instructors across the world navigate political pressures and innovate in their teaching. Together, these chapters argue for reclaiming and reimagining the introductory course to create intentional, flexible, and meaningful learning experiences.
