Industry of Occupation and Comfort with AI Use in Personal Health Care

Sat, August 8, 4:00 to 5:30pm, TBA

Abstract

Different occupations expose people to technologies in different ways. In the case of artificial intelligence (AI), industries seek to use AI differently, for example, as an agent or collaborator, as a tool, or for full automation. This provides people with different experiences with and knowledge of AI. These different experiences and knowledge may contribute to how individuals develop attitudes towards AI technologies. Medicine is a high-stakes industry where patients may encounter AI technologies, and patient consent is a central ethical principle of medicine. I therefore seek to investigate whether work industry affects an individual’s comfort with the use of AI in their personal health care. Using data from the 2022 Pew Research Center American Trends Panel, I intend to investigate whether a sense of personal job threat, comfort with new technology, AI knowledge, or attitudes towards AI generally and in health care mediate or explain this relationship.
