Towards a Sociology of Victim Interpretation and Rape Myth

Mon, August 10, 4:00 to 5:00pm, TBA

Abstract

Despite the extensive research done on rape myths, rape culture, and related concepts across criminological and psychological literature over the past several decades, sociological-focused theorizing and empirical investigation on the subject have been quite limited. This project reviews the state of current literature and discusses the reluctance of sociology as a discipline to center the study of sex-based violence. We discuss the potential contributions the discipline can make by increasingly focussing on and responding to sexual violence as a social and cutlural phenomenon.
