A Comparative Analysis of Determinants of Support for Worker Control in the U.S. and Soviet Russia

Sat, August 8, 2:00 to 3:30pm, TBA

Abstract

Research on the prospects for worker control and workplace democracy was once a vibrant field of sociological inquiry. The issue of power and inequality in the workplace is as important today as in the past, yet empirical work on this subject is less common. I re-analyze data from the 1991 United States wave of the Comparative Project on Class Structure and Class Consciousness (CSCC) while also offering the first analysis of attitudes toward workplace authority based on the 1991 Soviet Russia wave of the CSCC. My analyses use statistical techniques that overcome some limitations of previous analyses and allow for a more comprehensive analysis of the social and attitudinal determinants of support for workplace democracy. I compare my findings to previous work, highlight theoretical implications, and suggest avenues for future research.
