Session Submission Type: Invited Session (90 minute)
Many sociologists build rewarding careers outside academia—in research firms, policy institutes, nonprofits, government, and private corporations. This session features panelists who have successfully transitioned into non-academic roles, as well as others who bring perspectives from hiring for these roles. Together, they will share insights on job search strategies (which sociological skills are most valued in their sector and how to highlight those strengths in résumés, applications, and interviews), career expectations (e.g., salary, promotion, career trajectories), and what opportunities and challenges come with working beyond the academy. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for exploring and navigating career paths outside academia.
