Innovative Teaching Practices: Part 2

Sun, August 9, 12:45 to 1:30pm, TBA

Session Submission Type: Interactive Workshop

Description

This is Part 2 of a two-part session featuring three educational presentations on innovative teaching strategies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. The first presentation, “Disrupting the Hidden Curriculum through Transparent Prompt Design,” tackles the challenge of knowledge transfer—the extent to which students can apply what they learn in new settings. The presenters recommend using clearer assignment prompts based on Transparency in Teaching and Learning principles to support fair outcomes and help students extend their learning beyond college. The second presentation, “Journey Mapping as Pedagogy: Teaching Social Mobility through Mapping Methodology,” explores journey mapping as a qualitative method and teaching tool. Students develop visual maps of their educational pathways, reflect on their experiences, and analyze the structural factors influencing educational access and social mobility. This approach encourages students to formulate personal theories of social mobility and connect individual experiences to broader societal forces. Together, this two-part workshop highlights the necessity of inclusive teaching practices, offering actionable strategies for educators to enhance student engagement and success.
