Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memory and Activism

Fri, Oct 7, 2:00 to 3:50pm, Richmond Marriott Hotel, Richmond Marriott Hotel Salon H-AV Room

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Abstract

In the spirit of recognizing and honoring our collective sites of black memory and activism, this Roundtable will challenge participants to think about and make connections between the Civil Rights Movement and Black Lives Matter: what does it mean to stand on hallowed/holy ground? How do we remember and recognize the places where we once stood our ground? How did the Civil Rights Movement provide the foundation for the Black Lives Matter Movement? How do we recognize that we are now standing on holy ground (that our blood is now inextricably mixed with the blood of this land) and how should we teach people about this? In light of the mission of ASALH (to teach the world about our history), the Roundtable is designed to equip the audience with conscious raising experiences along with concrete ideas and strategies for using education as a tool to construct places of freedom for black lives in America.
